The grave of Captain (Capt) Walter Granlees Boys, 25th Battalion, of Maryborough, Qld. A master draper in civilian life, he embarked with the rank of Lieutenant (Lt) from Brisbane on HMAT Aeneas on 29th June 1916. After promotion to Captain (Capt), he died of wounds received in action on 5th August 1916 and was buried in the Warloy Ballion Communal Cemetery Extension, France. (AWM)

3151A Gunner William Henry Taylor,11th Field Artillery Brigade, of Maryborough, son of Henry and Annie Taylor, of Pialla, Queensland. A labourer prior to enlisting on 25 September 1915, he embarked from Brisbane, aboard HMAT Itonus (A50) on 30 December 1915. He died of wounds on 2 January 1917 in France, aged 29. He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. (AWM)
6322 Private (Pte) George Eric Fulcher, 25 Battalion, of Maryborough, Qld. Formerly a farmer, Pte Fulcher enlisted on 18 October 1916 and as a member of the 18th Reinforcements, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 23 December 1916. He served on the Western Front in Belgium and died of wounds he received at Polygon Wood on 20 September 1917, aged 26. (AWM)

528 Private (Pte) Henry Hathaway Pearce, 9th Battalion. A carpenter from Maryborough, Qld prior to enlistment, Pte Pearce embarked with E Company from Brisbane on HMAT Omrah on 24 September 1914. Originally reported as missing, a later Court of Inquiry determined that he had been killed during the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. (AWM)

2569 Private (Pte) Wilfred Ernest Turner, 4th Battalion. A fireman of Maryborough Qld, with three years service in the Citizens' Military Forces (CMF), Turner enlisted as a Pte on 16 November 1915. He embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) with the 5th Reinforcements on 19 September 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 6 September 1917. L Cpl Turner died of disease on 16 March 1918, aged 22, and is buried at Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery St Omer, France. (AWM)

Pte Keogh enlisted at the age of 20 on 16 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 14 October 1915 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln. He was captured at Pozieres, France on 31 August 1916 and held in German POW camps until he was transferred to Holland on 16 February 1918. He arrived in England on 23 February 1918 and after hospital treatment was returned to duty with the Australian Army Medical Corps in England. Pte Keogh arrived back in Australia on 22 September 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Staff Nurse (or Sister) Frances Mary Byron MacKellar, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS), of Maryborough, Qld. Staff Nurse MacKellar enlisted on 19 May 1917, and embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard RMS Khiva on 26 May 1917. She was posted to the 34th Welsh General Hospital at Deolali, India, situated in open country 160 miles from Bombay. In January 1919 she travelled from Bombay to England, where she was attached to No 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital (AAH) at Dartford, a hospital established to treat 'shell shock' and similar cases requiring specialist treatment. MacKellar was promoted to the rank of Sister in June 1919, and returned to Australia aboard SS Runic on 20 December 1919. Letters, documents and postcards related to the service of Sister MacKellar and her brothers 3906 Private Robin MacKellar and 639 Sergeant Duncan MacKellar are held by the Research Centre at PR03194. While serving at Gallipoli, he was reported missing in action on 28 June 1915 at Gaba Tepe and later confirmed to be a prisoner of the Turkish army. He died on 20 December 1916 while working on the Baghdad to Berlin Railway. These three bodies were later reinterred in the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. (AWM)

borough. Enlisted in Maryborough on Au
gust, 18th, 1914. Sailed from Pinkenba by
the “Omera,” with the original 9th Battalion.
Arrived in Egypt on the 4th December, and
camped at Mena Camp. After three months’
training he left for Lemnos on the 2nd
March, 1915, by "lonian. On the 24th April
he left for Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion,
and served duty as signaller at headquarters
from the Anzac landing till December I 6th,
1915. Was slightly wounded on May Ist,
1915. On the 28th February, 1915, he was
transferred to the 49th Battalion. On the
6th August, 1916, he left Egypt for France
by the S.S. “Megantic,” and arrived in Eng
land on the 15th August, 1916. After nine
weeks in Netley Hospital, he went to Hare
field Hospital (Auxiliary). Left Harefield
and sailed for Australia on the “Karoola,”
on the 16th October, 1916, via the Cape of
Good Hope. Arrived in Australia, and was
discharged 10th January, 1917.
ARMITAGE, Herbert John. Private, No.
50,243, 42nd and 15th Battalions. Son of
Edward Fitzgerald and Bridget Armitage,
of Kent Street, Maryborough. Born at Mary
borough. Educated at the Albert School,
Marybo rough. Volunteered as munition
worker on December Ist, 1916. Sailed
for England. Was engaged at a York
munition factory till the 1 Bth August, 1918.
Joined his brother in the 42nd Battalion be
fore it was broken up, and afterwards trans
ferred to the I sth Battalion, and a good deal
of his work consisted in despatch riding.
When Armistice was signed, returned home.
Arrived in September, 1919. Jack Wilfred
Armitage is his younger brother.
ARMITAGE, Jack Wilfred. Sergeant-major,
Ist Class Warrant Officer. Born at Mary
borough in December, 1895. Educated at
State School and Grammar School, Mary
borough. Son of Edward Fitzgerald and
Bridget Armitage, of Kent Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted as a private, and joined
the 42nd Battalion in 1915. After six
months' training at Enoggera, left for the
Front on June 5 th, 1916. Was promoted
sergeant-major of A Company, 42nd Batta
lion, and was rated Ist Class Warrant Officer
by General Birdwood, and, later on, Acting
Regimental Sergeant-major. Took part in
nearly all the battles from 1916 to the close
of the war. Although the 42nd Battalion
suffered severe losses, Sergt.-major Armitage
was never wounded. He was sole survivor
of original “A” Coy. Was transferred, with
remnant of his battalion, to the 15th Bat
talion.
AUSTIN, Albert, Private, No. 58287,
7th G.S.R. He was born at Nikenbah,
and was educated at Urangan. He was 21
years of age on the 22nd September, 1918.
He is the son of Zachariah Austin and Sarah
Austin, of Nikenbah. Before enlisting Pri
vate Austin was working on a farm. He
enlisted at Maryborough on the 12th June,
1918, and went to the Enoggera Camp. He
sailed on the I Ith October, 1918, and ar
rived at Cape Town. Was immediately re
turned to Australia on account of the Ar
mistice.
AXELSEN, Henry Herbert. Private, No.
58,055, 9th Battalion. He is the son of
Henry Axelsen and Francis Axelsen, of
Walker Street, Maryborough. He enlisted June,
1918, and went into camp at Brisbane
Sailed from Sydney on the 2nd September,
1918. He subsequently arrived in England
in November, 1918, where he completed his
training. He was despatched to France in
January, 1919.
BACK, Frederick Ernest. Private, No. 533,
9th Battalion. Born and educated in Mary
borough, Queensland. Son of Frederick
Back and Teresa Ann Back, of William
Street, Granville, Maryborough. Enlisted on
August 19th, 1914, and left with the First
Expeditionary Forces for Egypt, where he
completed his training. On the 25th April,
1915, he landed at Gallipoli with the Third
Brigade. He was badly wounded in August,
1915, and returned to Australia, medically
unfit, and was discharged.
BACK, Herbert Stanley. Private, No. 406,
15th Battalion. Son of Frederick Back
and Teresa Ann Back, of Granville,
Maryborough. Enlisted in September,
1914. Trained in Brisbane, and sailed for
Egypt in December, 1914. He completed his
training in Egpyt, and went to Gallipoli. Was
at the landing of 25th April, 1915. He was
wounded on the 9th May, 1915, and sent to
hospital. He subsequently returned to Gal
lipoli in July, 1915, and was killed on the 8th
August, 1915.
BARBELER, Sydney Cornelius. Driver, No.
1866, Field Artillery. Son of Conrad and
Annie Barbeler, of Tinana, Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, in the Light Horse,
and was subsequently transferred to the Ar
tillery. Sailed 3rd January, 1916, for Egypt,
where he completed his training. He went
to France, via Marseilles, and has never been
wounded.
BELL, Henry. Private, No. 284, 9th Batta
lion. Son of Henry James Bell and Mary Ann
Bell, of Coventry St., Maryborough. Served
in the Royal Australian Navy from Decem
ber 14th, 1906, to 14th December, 1912,
and was discharged as Ist Class Petty Officer.
Joined the Queenland Police Force sth June,
1913. Enlisted at Brisbane 9th Septem
ber, 1914, and camped at Enoggera. Sailed
for Egypt 24th September, where he com
pleted his training. Left for Lemnos Island,
and then to Gallipoli Was at the landing on
25th April, 1915. Wounded on the 12th
June, 1915, in the head. Proceeded to Malta
for medical treatment, and after 14 weeks
he went home to England for further treat
ment, where he was pronounced medically
unfit for active service. He returned to Aus
tralia per troophip "Suevic.” Was discharged
on 25th January, 1916.
BENGTSSON, Edward Herbert. Private, No.
193 7, 42nd Battalion. Born at Nikenbah, via
Pialba, in 1896, and educated at Yengarie
nnd Pinbarren Creek. The son of Charles
and Annie Matilda Bengtsson, of “The Wil
derness,” Pinbarren Creek, Cooran. Enlisted
in December, 1915, and went into camp
January, 1916. Left for England in August
same year, and thence to France. Wounded
slightly twice, and third time at Messines, in
July 1917, and has been in hospital ever
since. Discharged on 31st May, 1921.
BLATCHFORD, George Thomas. Private,
No. 4452, 9th Battalion. Son of Henry and
Mary Blatchford, of Pialba, late of Childers.
Enlisted in September, 1915. Went into
Enoggera Camp at Brisbane, and sailed
January, 1916, for Egypt, where he com
pleted his training. He was despatched to
France via Marseilles, and went straight to
the firing line, and was killed in action at the
battle of the Somme, on the 25th July, 1916.
BRADSHAW, William Edward. No. 5989.
15th Battalion. Born at Maryborough, and
educated at Christian Brothers’ School, Mary
borough. He is the son of Henry Thompson
Bradshaw and Frances Margaret Bradshaw,
of Ferry St., Maryborough. Enlisted in Chil
ders February or March, 1916. Sailed for
England, and was admitted to the 3 Ist Sou
thern Senital Hospital, England, 1 oth Febru
ary, 1917, suffering from gunshot wounds,
left arm, right thigh, and hand wounds, re
ceived while in France. Returned to Aus
tralia October or November, 1917.
BROWN, Carl Oscar. 2nd Lieutenant, 9th
Battalion. Born at lowa, America, was
educated at Maryborough. He was the son
of A. E. C. Brown and A. M. Brown of
Fort Street, Maryborough. Enlisted in Bris
bane in November, 1915. Put in three
months in camp, then went to Duntroon. Re
ceived his commission and was sent to Clon
curry and Townsville as Commanding Offi
cer in connection with Compulsory Enlist
ment. He subsequently put in further
training in Brisbane, and embarked for
England on the 14th June, 1917. Completed
his training at Salisbury Plain, and went to
France in April, 1918. Went straight into
action and was gassed and killed at Metterin
on 28th May, 1918, from a shell. Was
buried at Eblingham British Military Cere
tery, Haselbrouck. At time of his death he
was Adjutant,, and was recommended for
promotion.
CAMPBELL, William Claud. Driver, No.
1558, 53rd Battery. Driver Campbell was
born and educated at Maryborough, and is
the son of Patrick and Rachel Campbell, of
North Street, Maryborough. Enlisted in
August, 1915, and went to camp in Brisbane
for training. He sailed for Egypt with the
Light Horse on the 29th November, 1915.
He trained in Egypt and was transferred to
the Artillery, and went to France in March,
1916. He went into action in France, and
remained two years without furlough. He
returned to France after having furlough,
and remained there till the Armistice was
signed.

naller, No. 534, 9th Battalion. Son of Frank
and Amelia Angell, of Tooley Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted in Maryborough on Au
gust, 18th, 1914. Sailed from Pinkenba by
the “Omera,” with the original 9th Battalion.
Arrived in Egypt on the 4th December, and
camped at Mena Camp. After three months’
training he left for Lemnos on the 2nd
March, 1915, by "lonian. On the 24th April
he left for Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion,
and served duty as signaller at headquarters
from the Anzac landing till December I 6th,
1915. Was slightly wounded on May Ist,
1915. On the 28th February, 1915, he was
transferred to the 49th Battalion. On the
6th August, 1916, he left Egypt for France
by the S.S. “Megantic,” and arrived in Eng
land on the 15th August, 1916. After nine
weeks in Netley Hospital, he went to Hare
field Hospital (Auxiliary). Left Harefield
and sailed for Australia on the “Karoola,”
on the 16th October, 1916, via the Cape of
Good Hope. Arrived in Australia, and was
discharged 10th January, 1917.
ARMITAGE, Herbert John. Private, No.
50,243, 42nd and 15th Battalions. Son of
Edward Fitzgerald and Bridget Armitage,
of Kent Street, Maryborough. Born at Mary
borough. Educated at the Albert School,
Marybo rough. Volunteered as munition
worker on December Ist, 1916. Sailed
for England. Was engaged at a York
munition factory till the 1 Bth August, 1918.
Joined his brother in the 42nd Battalion be
fore it was broken up, and afterwards trans
ferred to the I sth Battalion, and a good deal
of his work consisted in despatch riding.
When Armistice was signed, returned home.
Arrived in September, 1919. Jack Wilfred
Armitage is his younger brother.
ARMITAGE, Jack Wilfred. Sergeant-major,
Ist Class Warrant Officer. Born at Mary
borough in December, 1895. Educated at
State School and Grammar School, Mary
borough. Son of Edward Fitzgerald and
Bridget Armitage, of Kent Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted as a private, and joined
the 42nd Battalion in 1915. After six
months' training at Enoggera, left for the
Front on June 5 th, 1916. Was promoted
sergeant-major of A Company, 42nd Batta
lion, and was rated Ist Class Warrant Officer
by General Birdwood, and, later on, Acting
Regimental Sergeant-major. Took part in
nearly all the battles from 1916 to the close
of the war. Although the 42nd Battalion
suffered severe losses, Sergt.-major Armitage
was never wounded. He was sole survivor
of original “A” Coy. Was transferred, with
remnant of his battalion, to the 15th Bat
talion.
AUSTIN, Albert, Private, No. 58287,
7th G.S.R. He was born at Nikenbah,
and was educated at Urangan. He was 21
years of age on the 22nd September, 1918.
He is the son of Zachariah Austin and Sarah
Austin, of Nikenbah. Before enlisting Pri
vate Austin was working on a farm. He
enlisted at Maryborough on the 12th June,
1918, and went to the Enoggera Camp. He
sailed on the I Ith October, 1918, and ar
rived at Cape Town. Was immediately re
turned to Australia on account of the Ar
mistice.
AXELSEN, Henry Herbert. Private, No.
58,055, 9th Battalion. He is the son of
Henry Axelsen and Francis Axelsen, of
Walker Street, Maryborough. He enlisted June,
1918, and went into camp at Brisbane
Sailed from Sydney on the 2nd September,
1918. He subsequently arrived in England
in November, 1918, where he completed his
training. He was despatched to France in
January, 1919.
BACK, Frederick Ernest. Private, No. 533,
9th Battalion. Born and educated in Mary
borough, Queensland. Son of Frederick
Back and Teresa Ann Back, of William
Street, Granville, Maryborough. Enlisted on
August 19th, 1914, and left with the First
Expeditionary Forces for Egypt, where he
completed his training. On the 25th April,
1915, he landed at Gallipoli with the Third
Brigade. He was badly wounded in August,
1915, and returned to Australia, medically
unfit, and was discharged.
BACK, Herbert Stanley. Private, No. 406,
15th Battalion. Son of Frederick Back
and Teresa Ann Back, of Granville,
Maryborough. Enlisted in September,
1914. Trained in Brisbane, and sailed for
Egypt in December, 1914. He completed his
training in Egpyt, and went to Gallipoli. Was
at the landing of 25th April, 1915. He was
wounded on the 9th May, 1915, and sent to
hospital. He subsequently returned to Gal
lipoli in July, 1915, and was killed on the 8th
August, 1915.
BARBELER, Sydney Cornelius. Driver, No.
1866, Field Artillery. Son of Conrad and
Annie Barbeler, of Tinana, Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, in the Light Horse,
and was subsequently transferred to the Ar
tillery. Sailed 3rd January, 1916, for Egypt,
where he completed his training. He went
to France, via Marseilles, and has never been
wounded.
BELL, Henry. Private, No. 284, 9th Batta
lion. Son of Henry James Bell and Mary Ann
Bell, of Coventry St., Maryborough. Served
in the Royal Australian Navy from Decem
ber 14th, 1906, to 14th December, 1912,
and was discharged as Ist Class Petty Officer.
Joined the Queenland Police Force sth June,
1913. Enlisted at Brisbane 9th Septem
ber, 1914, and camped at Enoggera. Sailed
for Egypt 24th September, where he com
pleted his training. Left for Lemnos Island,
and then to Gallipoli Was at the landing on
25th April, 1915. Wounded on the 12th
June, 1915, in the head. Proceeded to Malta
for medical treatment, and after 14 weeks
he went home to England for further treat
ment, where he was pronounced medically
unfit for active service. He returned to Aus
tralia per troophip "Suevic.” Was discharged
on 25th January, 1916.
BENGTSSON, Edward Herbert. Private, No.
193 7, 42nd Battalion. Born at Nikenbah, via
Pialba, in 1896, and educated at Yengarie
nnd Pinbarren Creek. The son of Charles
and Annie Matilda Bengtsson, of “The Wil
derness,” Pinbarren Creek, Cooran. Enlisted
in December, 1915, and went into camp
January, 1916. Left for England in August
same year, and thence to France. Wounded
slightly twice, and third time at Messines, in
July 1917, and has been in hospital ever
since. Discharged on 31st May, 1921.
BLATCHFORD, George Thomas. Private,
No. 4452, 9th Battalion. Son of Henry and
Mary Blatchford, of Pialba, late of Childers.
Enlisted in September, 1915. Went into
Enoggera Camp at Brisbane, and sailed
January, 1916, for Egypt, where he com
pleted his training. He was despatched to
France via Marseilles, and went straight to
the firing line, and was killed in action at the
battle of the Somme, on the 25th July, 1916.
BRADSHAW, William Edward. No. 5989.
15th Battalion. Born at Maryborough, and
educated at Christian Brothers’ School, Mary
borough. He is the son of Henry Thompson
Bradshaw and Frances Margaret Bradshaw,
of Ferry St., Maryborough. Enlisted in Chil
ders February or March, 1916. Sailed for
England, and was admitted to the 3 Ist Sou
thern Senital Hospital, England, 1 oth Febru
ary, 1917, suffering from gunshot wounds,
left arm, right thigh, and hand wounds, re
ceived while in France. Returned to Aus
tralia October or November, 1917.
BROWN, Carl Oscar. 2nd Lieutenant, 9th
Battalion. Born at lowa, America, was
educated at Maryborough. He was the son
of A. E. C. Brown and A. M. Brown of
Fort Street, Maryborough. Enlisted in Bris
bane in November, 1915. Put in three
months in camp, then went to Duntroon. Re
ceived his commission and was sent to Clon
curry and Townsville as Commanding Offi
cer in connection with Compulsory Enlist
ment. He subsequently put in further
training in Brisbane, and embarked for
England on the 14th June, 1917. Completed
his training at Salisbury Plain, and went to
France in April, 1918. Went straight into
action and was gassed and killed at Metterin
on 28th May, 1918, from a shell. Was
buried at Eblingham British Military Cere
tery, Haselbrouck. At time of his death he
was Adjutant,, and was recommended for
promotion.
CAMPBELL, William Claud. Driver, No.
1558, 53rd Battery. Driver Campbell was
born and educated at Maryborough, and is
the son of Patrick and Rachel Campbell, of
North Street, Maryborough. Enlisted in
August, 1915, and went to camp in Brisbane
for training. He sailed for Egypt with the
Light Horse on the 29th November, 1915.
He trained in Egypt and was transferred to
the Artillery, and went to France in March,
1916. He went into action in France, and
remained two years without furlough. He
returned to France after having furlough,
and remained there till the Armistice was
signed.
CLARKE, Norman Leslie Spencer. Private,
No. 55 79, 15th Battalion. Born at Croydon
Junction, and educated at the Boys’ Central
School, Maryborough. The son of William
James Clarke and Harriet Clarke, of Croy
don Junction, via Maryborough. Enlisted at
Brisbane on the 26th January, 1916, and
went into camp. Sailed for Egypt on the
20th April, 1916, and left Egypt with the
15th Battalion for France. Remained in
France till the 27th March, 1918, when he
was wounded at Heburturn. Invalided to
England, where he remained till he em
barked for Australia on the 3rd January,
1919. He arrived in Brisbane on the I 1 th
February, and was discharged 11th April,
1919.
COSTELLO, Mortimer. Private, No. 1313,
1 sth Battalion. Private Costello was born in
Maryborough; was educated at the Christian
Brothers’ School, Maryborough. He is the
son of Mary Costello and Thomas Costello,
Shanid,” Queen Street, Maryborough. En
listed in Maryborough on December sth,
1914. Trained in Enoggera, and sailed for
Egypt in January, 1915. Completed his
training and went to Gallipoli. He subse
quently went to France, and was wounded
and sent to England. He went back to the
firing line, and was taken ill till the Armis
tice was signed.
COZENS, Percy. Private, No. 3050, 25th
Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of Hubert Oliver Cozens
and the late Amelia Cozens, of Ferry Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted October, 1915, and
went into camp in Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt
in December, 1915, thence to France, via
Marseilles, in March 1916, and went straight
to the firing line. Was only absent from the
line for a short spell at the end of 1916 with
trench feet, but apart from that he was in all
the battles in his portion of the line till 11th
October, 1917, when he was killed by shell
fire.
COZENS, Hubert Oliver. Private, No. 7031,
25th Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of Hubert Hollis Cozens
and the late Amelia Cozens, of Ferry Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted in July, 1917, and
trained in the A.M.C., but left to join the
25 th Battalion. He left Queensland Novem
ber 3rd, 1917, for Egypt. Subsequently sent
to France, and was wounded early in Aug.,
1918. He was sent to hospital, but returned
to the firing line the same month, and re
mained there until the Armistice was signed.
4393, 25th Battalion. Born on the 16th De
cember, 1894, at Tiaro. Private Cunning
ham is the son of Stewart Crumby Cunning
ham and Mary Ellen Cunningham, of Queen
Street, Maryborough. He enlisted with his
brother Colin at Maryborough on the 23rd
September, 1915, and proceeded to Enog
gera Camp on 7th October, 1915. He left
Brisbane on the 29th March, 1916, and ar
rived in Egypt, and subsequently went to
England. He went to France in July, 1916,
with his brother Colin, and was wounded on
the 14th November, 1916, after five months’
service on the field. (He was wounded at
Fleurs), and marked unfit for infantry. He
was transferred to A.A.S.C., and embarked
for Australia in December, 1918.

3148, 49th Batt,, late 9th. Corporal Gum
ming was born and educated at Mary
borough. He is the son of William Thomas
Cumming and Josephine Cumming, of Ferry
Street, Maryborough. Enlisted on August
19th, 1915, and went to camp at Brisbane.
He left Australia on the sth October, 1915,
with the 9th Batt., by the H.M.T.S. “Wari
alda. He was subsequently transferred to
the 49th Batt. (in April, 1916), He went
into action at Fleur Baix and was wounded
at Nanancourt on April sth, 1918. He was
sent to England, and was returned home on
CUNNINGHAM, Wilfred. Corporal, No. 4393, 25th Battalion. Born on the 16th De
cember, 1894, at Tiaro. Private Cunning
ham is the son of Stewart Crumby Cunning
ham and Mary Ellen Cunningham, of Queen
Street, Maryborough. He enlisted with his
brother Colin at Maryborough on the 23rd
September, 1915, and proceeded to Enog

CUNNINGHAM, Colin Edgar. Signaller, No.
4392, 25th Battalion. Was born at Tiaro on
the 20th May, 1896. Signaller Cunningham
is the son of Stewart Crumby Cunningham
and Mary Ellen Cunningham, of Queen
Street, Maryborough. Enlisted with his
brother Wilfred, on the 23 rd September,
1915. Left Tiaro for Enoggera on the 7th
October, 1915, and proceeded to Egypt with
his brothers Leslie and Wilfred, and thence
to England. He subsequently left England for
France in July, 1916, and was wounded at
Fleurs on the 14th November, 1916. He
subsequently went to England and recovered.
He classified as signaller, passing his
exam., and was again sent to France. He
was despatched to Belgium, where he re
mained on duty until March, 1919.
CURTIS, Arthur Edward. Private, No. 5804,
6th Rein. Private Curtis was born and edu
cated at Nikenbah. He is the son of James
Curtis and Anna Mary Curtis, of Pialba.
Enlisted 12th June, 1918, and camped in
Brisbane. Sailed on September 4th, 1918,
from Sydney. He arrived at the Cape and
influenza was raging on the troopship.
Private Curtis was so ill that he was left at
Sierra Leone, He subseqeuntly was brought
to England. On recovering from his illness
he was sent on active service to France in
September, when he got orders to leave for
home. Arrived in Brisbane on 1 6th March,
1920.
EISENTRIGER, Frederick. Private, No. 2303,
41st Battalion- Pte. Eisentriger was born
at Mrytle Creek, Maryborough, and edu
cated at Gunalda, North Coast Line. He is
the son of Frederick Eisentriger and the late
Amelia Eisentriger, of Tooley Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted June, 1916, and went
into camp at Brisbane. He sailed October,
1916, for England, where he went to Salis
bury Plain to complete his training. He
was sent to France and went straight to the
firing line. Was wounded and sent to Eng
land to recuperate. He was returned to
France, and remained there until the Armis
tice was signed, when he returned to Aus
tralia.
FOSTER, Reginald William, First Lieutenant.
He was born at Rockhampton and educated
at Rockhampton. He was the son of the late
Frank Oswald Foster and Kate Foster, of
Oswald Street, Rockhampton. Lieut. Foster
was connected with the cadets in Mary
borough, where he gained his Lieutenancy
in July, 1906. Took charge 2 7th September,
1907, and was Adjutant in 1910. He was
one of the few who received his commission
at the hands of Baron Northcote. Enlisted
February I Ith, 1915, He went into camp
at Brisbane, and sailed for Egypt June, 1915,
and landed at Cairo 24th July, 1915. He
was killed in action August Bth, 1915, at
Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.
FRENCH, Charles Granville. Lieutenant, No.
4/86, 15th Battn. Born and educated at
Maryborough, and is the son of the late
George William French and Mary French, of
Adelaide St., Maryborough. Enlisted late in
1914, and went to camp in Brisbane, where
he was attached to the 15 th Battalion. He
sailed for Egypt in March, 1916, and went
into camp there. He subsequently sailed to
England, where he went into Salisbury Camp,
to complete his training. He was despatched
to France, and went to the firing line. He
was wounded and returned to the firing line.
Was again wounded and sent to England.
Promoted on the field to rank of Lieutenant.
Was pronounced medically unfit for active
service, and was transferred to the staff, and
discharged 1 st April, 1919.
GOODWIN, Andrew Oliver. Private, No.
2434. Son of the late William King Goodwin
and Alice Goodwin, of Saltwater Creek Road,
Maryborough. Enlisted 28th February, 1916,
and went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for
England on 19th September, 1916, per S.S.
"Seang Choon,” and arrived in England 9th
December, 1916, where he went into camp
to complete his training. He was despatched
to France, and was wounded at Messines
on 7th June, 1917, and at Dernacourt sth
April, 1918. He left for Australia on 16th
January, 1919, and arrived at Brisbane Bth
March, 1919, per H.M.T. “Demosthenes.”
GROTH, Herbert. Signaller, No. 602 7, 4th
Div., Wireless Section, late 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Tinana, Maryborough,
and is the son of George Groth and the late
Margaret Groth, of Tinana. ?daryborough.
Lnhsted early in 1916, and went into camp
at Brisbane. Sailed Bth August, 1916, for
England. He arrived in due course, and was
despatched to Salisbury Plain to complete
his training. Left for France, and went into
action. He was slightly wounded, and went
into hospital. He returned to the firing line,
and was sent to Belgium, and was in action
when the Armistice was signed. Returned,
arriving in Australia sth August, 1919.
GROUNDWATER, William Harold. No.
3702 Engmears - 7th F. Co. Born and edu
cated at Maryborough, and is the son of Wil
liam Robert Groundwater and Cecelia Amelia
Groundwater, of Laurel Bank. Tinana, Mary
borough. Enlisted 4th October, 1916 and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed on Jan.
24, 1917 and arr ived in England April
12th, 1917, where he was despatched to
Salisbury Plain He left for France 16th
September, 1917, and went to the firing
line. he was wounded and gassed on 23rd
May 1918. He returned to Australia 6th
April, 1919, and was discharged 14th May,
HALL, Norman, M.M. Corporal, No. 3059,
49th Battalion. Was born at Ipswich, and
educated at Maryborough. He was the son of
the late John Hall and Mary Ann Hall, of
Ferry and Walker Streets, Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, and went to camp in
Brisbane. Sailed October 4th for Egypt,
where he completed his training. He was
despatched to France, via Marseilles. Went
straight to the firing line as Battalion Run
ner, and was killed 7th June, 1917. Was
awarded the Military Medal for bravery in
the field. Gazetted 16th November, 1916.
Was awarded bar to Military Medal, and ga
zetted Bth December, 1916.
HALL, Henry Joseph. Private, No. 7267,
25th Battalion, Machine Gun Section. Born
at Sydney, and educated at Maryborough. He
was the son of the late John Hall and Mary
Ann Hall, of Ferry and Walker Streets, Mary
borough. Enlisted October, 1916, and went
to camp at Brisbane. Sailed 23rd January,
1917, for England, when he went to Salis
bury Plain to complete his training. He was
sent to France, and went into action. He
was killed in action on 24th June, 1918.
HALL, Alexander. Corporal, No. 3364, 49th
Battalion. Born in Sydney and educated at
Maryborough. He is the son of the late John
Hall and Mary Ann Hall, of Ferry and Wal
ker Streets, Maryborough. Enlisted August
6th, 1915, and went into camp at Brisbane.
He sailed for Egypt at the end of October,
1915, and went into camp to complete his
training. He subsequently went to France,
but took ill on the way, and was sent to hos
pital in the base. He was despatched to the
firing line, where he joined his own battalion.
Was wounded in the head, and returned to
Australia, and was honourably discharged
in Brisbane on 3rd March, 1919.
HARVEY, William Crosbie. Private, No.
7718, 15th Battalion, late 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Major William Cavendish Harvey
and Frances Harvey, of Ellena Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted at Maryborough 4th
March, 1917. Entered Artillery Camp at
Enoggera. Left 2nd May for Seymour, Vic
toria, for training. Transferred to Infantry,
and joined 26th Rein. 9th Batt. Left Sydney
October by the H.M.T. "Euripides.” Sailed
via Panama Canal. Trained at Salisbury
Plains and proceeded to France 30th March,
1918, and was transferred to the 1 sth Batta
lion. Joined the 9th Platoon, C Company,
as Lewis Gunner. Saw service at Hebuterne,
Villiers Brettoneaux, and Hamel. Was
wounded in left leg at Hamel on 4th July,
1918. In hospital till 28th October, 1918.
Returned home by H.M.T. "Sardinia," and
discharged 7th March, 1919.
HARVEY, Henry Cavendish. Lieutenant.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of William Cavendish Harvey and
Frances Ann Harvey, of Ellena Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted 20th August, 1914, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed per S.S.
"Omrah," 24th September, 1914. Arrived
in Egypt 6th December, 1914. Left Egypt
for Lemnos Ist March, 1915. Landed at
Gallipoli 25th April, 1915, with 9th Batta
lion. Wounded same day and sent to Egypt
to hospital. Returned June, 1915, and
evacuated November, 1915. Was invalided
to Australia May, 1916, medically unfit.
HATTON, James Edward. No. 6552, 26th
Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough, and is the son of the late William
Hatton and Sarah Hatton, of Queen Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted October, 1916, and
went to camp at Enoggera. Sailed early in
1917 for England. Arrived in due course,

HATTON, Percy. No. 3170, 49th Battalion,
late 52nd. Born and educated in Mary
borough, and is the son of the late William
Hatton and Sarah Hatton, of Queen Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted 6th September, 1916,
and went to camp in Brisbane. Sailed Novem
ber, 1916, for England, where he went to
Salisbury Plain. Left for France, and went
to the firing line. there for eighteen
months. Returned to England, and thence
to Australia. Arrived in due course, and
discharged Ist May, 1919.
HEATH, James Lindsay. No. 2029, 51st
Battery, sth Brigade. Born and educated at
Maryborough, and is the son of Peter Adolph
Heath and Margaret Jane Hjath, of Queen
Street, Maryborough. Enlisted in Brisbane,
2nd September, 1915, and went into camp
at Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt 21st January,
1916, where he completed his training. Sailed
for France about June same year, and went
straight to the firing line, when he was
transferred to the Light Artillery as gunner.
Afterwards transferred as Driver, and in January 1918 was
wounded by shell fire in the knee.
He was sent to a Canadian Hospital in France for treatment.
Then to England where he remained until the Armistace was
signed. He was then transferred
to the Army Reserve.
CURTIS, Arthur Edward. Private, No. 5804,
6th Rein. Private Curtis was born and edu
cated at Nikenbah. He is the son of James
Curtis and Anna Mary Curtis, of Pialba.
Enlisted 12th June, 1918, and camped in
Brisbane. Sailed on September 4th, 1918,
from Sydney. He arrived at the Cape and
influenza was raging on the troopship.
Private Curtis was so ill that he was left at
Sierra Leone, He subseqeuntly was brought
to England. On recovering from his illness
he was sent on active service to France in
September, when he got orders to leave for
home. Arrived in Brisbane on 1 6th March,
1920.
EISENTRIGER, Frederick. Private, No. 2303,
41st Battalion- Pte. Eisentriger was born
at Mrytle Creek, Maryborough, and edu
cated at Gunalda, North Coast Line. He is
the son of Frederick Eisentriger and the late
Amelia Eisentriger, of Tooley Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted June, 1916, and went
into camp at Brisbane. He sailed October,
1916, for England, where he went to Salis
bury Plain to complete his training. He
was sent to France and went straight to the
firing line. Was wounded and sent to Eng
land to recuperate. He was returned to
France, and remained there until the Armis
tice was signed, when he returned to Aus
tralia.
FOSTER, Reginald William, First Lieutenant.
He was born at Rockhampton and educated
at Rockhampton. He was the son of the late
Frank Oswald Foster and Kate Foster, of
Oswald Street, Rockhampton. Lieut. Foster
was connected with the cadets in Mary
borough, where he gained his Lieutenancy
in July, 1906. Took charge 2 7th September,
1907, and was Adjutant in 1910. He was
one of the few who received his commission
at the hands of Baron Northcote. Enlisted
February I Ith, 1915, He went into camp
at Brisbane, and sailed for Egypt June, 1915,
and landed at Cairo 24th July, 1915. He
was killed in action August Bth, 1915, at
Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.
FRENCH, Charles Granville. Lieutenant, No.
4/86, 15th Battn. Born and educated at
Maryborough, and is the son of the late
George William French and Mary French, of
Adelaide St., Maryborough. Enlisted late in
1914, and went to camp in Brisbane, where
he was attached to the 15 th Battalion. He
sailed for Egypt in March, 1916, and went
into camp there. He subsequently sailed to
England, where he went into Salisbury Camp,
to complete his training. He was despatched
to France, and went to the firing line. He
was wounded and returned to the firing line.
Was again wounded and sent to England.
Promoted on the field to rank of Lieutenant.
Was pronounced medically unfit for active
service, and was transferred to the staff, and
discharged 1 st April, 1919.
GOODWIN, Andrew Oliver. Private, No.
2434. Son of the late William King Goodwin
and Alice Goodwin, of Saltwater Creek Road,
Maryborough. Enlisted 28th February, 1916,
and went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for
England on 19th September, 1916, per S.S.
"Seang Choon,” and arrived in England 9th
December, 1916, where he went into camp
to complete his training. He was despatched
to France, and was wounded at Messines
on 7th June, 1917, and at Dernacourt sth
April, 1918. He left for Australia on 16th
January, 1919, and arrived at Brisbane Bth
March, 1919, per H.M.T. “Demosthenes.”
GROTH, Herbert. Signaller, No. 602 7, 4th
Div., Wireless Section, late 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Tinana, Maryborough,
and is the son of George Groth and the late
Margaret Groth, of Tinana. ?daryborough.
Lnhsted early in 1916, and went into camp
at Brisbane. Sailed Bth August, 1916, for
England. He arrived in due course, and was
despatched to Salisbury Plain to complete
his training. Left for France, and went into
action. He was slightly wounded, and went
into hospital. He returned to the firing line,
and was sent to Belgium, and was in action
when the Armistice was signed. Returned,
arriving in Australia sth August, 1919.
GROUNDWATER, William Harold. No.
3702 Engmears - 7th F. Co. Born and edu
cated at Maryborough, and is the son of Wil
liam Robert Groundwater and Cecelia Amelia
Groundwater, of Laurel Bank. Tinana, Mary
borough. Enlisted 4th October, 1916 and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed on Jan.
24, 1917 and arr ived in England April
12th, 1917, where he was despatched to
Salisbury Plain He left for France 16th
September, 1917, and went to the firing
line. he was wounded and gassed on 23rd
May 1918. He returned to Australia 6th
April, 1919, and was discharged 14th May,
HALL, Norman, M.M. Corporal, No. 3059,
49th Battalion. Was born at Ipswich, and
educated at Maryborough. He was the son of
the late John Hall and Mary Ann Hall, of
Ferry and Walker Streets, Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, and went to camp in
Brisbane. Sailed October 4th for Egypt,
where he completed his training. He was
despatched to France, via Marseilles. Went
straight to the firing line as Battalion Run
ner, and was killed 7th June, 1917. Was
awarded the Military Medal for bravery in
the field. Gazetted 16th November, 1916.
Was awarded bar to Military Medal, and ga
zetted Bth December, 1916.
HALL, Henry Joseph. Private, No. 7267,
25th Battalion, Machine Gun Section. Born
at Sydney, and educated at Maryborough. He
was the son of the late John Hall and Mary
Ann Hall, of Ferry and Walker Streets, Mary
borough. Enlisted October, 1916, and went
to camp at Brisbane. Sailed 23rd January,
1917, for England, when he went to Salis
bury Plain to complete his training. He was
sent to France, and went into action. He
was killed in action on 24th June, 1918.
HALL, Alexander. Corporal, No. 3364, 49th
Battalion. Born in Sydney and educated at
Maryborough. He is the son of the late John
Hall and Mary Ann Hall, of Ferry and Wal
ker Streets, Maryborough. Enlisted August
6th, 1915, and went into camp at Brisbane.
He sailed for Egypt at the end of October,
1915, and went into camp to complete his
training. He subsequently went to France,
but took ill on the way, and was sent to hos
pital in the base. He was despatched to the
firing line, where he joined his own battalion.
Was wounded in the head, and returned to
Australia, and was honourably discharged
in Brisbane on 3rd March, 1919.
HARVEY, William Crosbie. Private, No.
7718, 15th Battalion, late 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Major William Cavendish Harvey
and Frances Harvey, of Ellena Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted at Maryborough 4th
March, 1917. Entered Artillery Camp at
Enoggera. Left 2nd May for Seymour, Vic
toria, for training. Transferred to Infantry,
and joined 26th Rein. 9th Batt. Left Sydney
October by the H.M.T. "Euripides.” Sailed
via Panama Canal. Trained at Salisbury
Plains and proceeded to France 30th March,
1918, and was transferred to the 1 sth Batta
lion. Joined the 9th Platoon, C Company,
as Lewis Gunner. Saw service at Hebuterne,
Villiers Brettoneaux, and Hamel. Was
wounded in left leg at Hamel on 4th July,
1918. In hospital till 28th October, 1918.
Returned home by H.M.T. "Sardinia," and
discharged 7th March, 1919.
HARVEY, Henry Cavendish. Lieutenant.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of William Cavendish Harvey and
Frances Ann Harvey, of Ellena Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted 20th August, 1914, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed per S.S.
"Omrah," 24th September, 1914. Arrived
in Egypt 6th December, 1914. Left Egypt

lion. Wounded same day and sent to Egypt
to hospital. Returned June, 1915, and
evacuated November, 1915. Was invalided
to Australia May, 1916, medically unfit.

borough. The son of the late Charles Hebble
white and Betsy Hebblewhite (now Mrs. H.
Scotney) Nikenbah, Pialba Line. Enlisted in
Maryborough, August, 1915, and camped in
Brisbane. Sailed sth October, 1915, for
Egypt. Left for France in March, 1916, and
was admitted to Edmonton Military Hospital,
18/1/17, suffering from trench feet. He re
turned to France, and was killed on 26th
March. 1918.
HERMANN, Alfred Danial C. Trooper, No.
1939, 1 Ith Light Horse. Born at Mary
borough, and educated at Urangan. The son
of the late G. and A. M. H. Hermann (now
Mrs. Northcott), of Nikenbah, Pialba Line.
Enlisted 8th October, 1916, and camped at
Brisbane. Sailed in February, 1917, for
Egypt, arriving on 1 7th March, 1917. Was
sent to the Palestine area, and took part in
the battles of Gaza, Beersheeba, and other
stunts, and went through the campaign in
Egypt, and finished at Tripoli. Discharged
on account of the signing of the Armistice,
and was in the first draft that came to Australia.
HERSCHELL, William Henry. Private, No.
6095, 26th Battalion. Born at Maryborough
in 1885 and educated at Maryborough. En
listed at Toowoomba on 18th August, 1916,
and sailed from Brisbane for England in
October, going to Salisbury Plain. Sent
into the firing line in France and wounded
on 20th September, 1917, at the Battle of
Ypres. Subsequently returned to Australia.
HILLS, James Ernest. Private, No. 3146,
45th Battalion. Was born and educated in
Maryborough. He is the son of Ernest Hills
and Mary Elizabeth Hills, of Pialba, Qld.
Enlisted in Sept., 1916, and went to camp
in October, at Brisbane, where he was at
tached to the 45th Battalion. He sailed end
of 1916 for England, and went to Salisbury
Plain to complete his training. He was de
spatched to France, and went straight to
the firing line. Was wounded twice and sent
to England to recuperate on first wound, and
stayed in France the second time.
HOCKLEY, Rupert Reginald. Major. Born
at Ipswich, and educated at Maryborough
Grammar School. The son of the late James
and Elizabeth Hockley. Sailed on 1 sth
November, 1915, as Senior Company Com
mander, 3 Ist Battalion, and served in Egypt
and the Sinai Peninsula until March, 1916,
when he was elected to be the first Second
in-Command of the newly-formed 2nd Aust.
Pioneer Battalion. Arrived at Marseilles on
25th March, and went into the line on 7th
April, 1916. In the following July moved
to the Somme. Took part in the battle of
Pozieres and Moquet Farm. Did invaluable
work in reconnaisance and supervision dur
these operations. On the 1 sth November,
1916, he assumed the command of the
battalion as temporary Lieut.-Colonel for
three months. He was next employed near
Lesars, and in driving the Germans back
through Baupaume to the vaunted Hinden
berg Line, and took part in the attack on
the Hlndenberg Line between Bullecourt and
Queant. Into the line on 9th September,
1917, for the offensive on the Menin Road,
where he did very strenuous gallant work.
Was severely wounded on the 1 9th Septem
ber, and died at a casualty clearing station
next day. He was buried in a military ceme
tery between Poperinghe and Abeel. He
was awarded the D.S.O. and mentioned in
the Commander-in-Chief’s despatches.
JAKEMAN, Tom. Private, No. 2648. Born
at Maryborough on 6th June, 1883, and edu
cated at Maryborough and Lakeside. Son of
the late James and the late Mary Jakeman.
JOHNSTON, Alexander Wilfred. Acting
Sergeant, No. 17,170, Wireless Squadron.
Born at Maryborough in 1881, and
educated at the Newtown West State
School, Maryborough. Son of the late
Alexander George and Ann Elizabeth John
ston, of Maryborough. Married on 26th
June, 1908, Amy Laura Hopkins, daughter
of the late Isaac and the late Mary Ann
Hopkins. Children Norman Wilfred and
Harold Isaac Johnston. Left Sydney on
20th January, 1917, with the Bth Rein
forcements of the Ist Australian Wireless
Squadron for Mesopotamia, and arrived at
Basra early in March. After serving as
Sapper and Acting Sergeant in charge of
the Wireless Equipment Stores at Bagdad,
was invalided to Deolali and Upper Topa, in
India, and then to Australia, in August,
1918.
JONES, Daniel. Private, No. 1356, sth Light
Horse. Born and educated at Maryborough.
He is the son of Morgan and Margaret Jones.
Enlisted 12/8/15, and sailed 5/10/15, for
Egypt, and was in all engagements through
Palestine. Was wounded slightly, and went
into the I 4th Aust. Gen. Hospital, Port Said,
and, after recovery, went back to the firing
line, and remained on active service up to
the Armistice. Arrived back in Australia
4/8/19, per S.S. "Madras.”
KENNEDY, John. Private, No. 5617, 26th
Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. He is the son of Henry and Jane
Kennedy, of Dundas Street, Granville, Mary
borough. Enlisted, and went into camp at
Brisbane on 15th April, 1916, for training.
Sailed for England 7th September, 1916, and
completed his training at Salisbury Plain,
Left for France November, and in March,
1917, was sent to Bristol, England, with
trench feet, where he remained for about
three months. Returned to France June,
1917, and remained in line till 2nd Septem
ber, 1918, when he was wounded in left arm
by machine gun fire, and sent to England for
treatment. He was in hospital for nearly
twelve months, the muscles and nerves in the
arm being badly damaged. Was drafted for
Australia, where he arrived in due course,
and finally discharged.
LEE, Ernest W. C. No. 6273, 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Ernest Lee and Minnie Lee, of
Ann Street, Maryborough. Enlisted 26th
Feb., 1916, and went to camp at Brisbane.
Attached to the 9th Batt. Sailed for England
7th September, 1916, and went to Salisbury
Plain. Left for France, and into action. Was
gassed and was sent into hospital. He re
turned to the firing line, and contracted
trench feet. He was sent to hospital again,
but subsequently returned to the line. He
was drafted for Australia, where he arrived
in due course and finally discharged.
LINDEBERG, Walter Clarence. No. 31,900.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Christian August Lindeberg and
Henrietta Christine Lindeberg, of Dundas St.,
Maryborough. Enlisted July, 1916, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed with his
brother Albert Victor, and was with him till
they arrived in the lines. He was gassed in
October, 1917, and was sent to England for
treatment, where he remained until about
March, 1918. Returned to the firing line and
remained there till the Armistice was signed.
Left for Australia, and was finally discharged.
LINDEBERG, Albert Victor Vernon. Gunner,
No. 31,901. Born and educated at Mary
borough. He is the son of Christian August
and Henrietta Christine Lindeberg, of Dundas
St., Maryborough. Enlisted July, 1916, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for Eng
land early in February 1917, and arrived in
April, and went to Salisbury Plain to com
plete his training. Left for France in July,
1917, and went straight to the firing line,
where he remained practically the whole
time without a break until August, 1918,
when he was gassed and dropped behind the
line for a short spell. Returned to the line
and remained there till the Armistice was
signed. He was with his brother, Walter
Clarence, the whole time.
LINDEBERG, Percy Lawrence. Born and edu
cated at Maryborough. He is the son of
Christian August and Henrietta Christine
Lindeberg, of Dundas Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted about October, 191 6,and camped
in Sydney. Sailed for England in January,
1917, and completed his training at Salis
bury Plain. He worked in the Aviation
School, where he had the misfortune to lose
an eye, which prevented his going to France
for active service. He remained in England
the whole time in aviation and munition work
till the end of the war.
MARTENS, Albert Stanley. Private, No.
120, 27th Batt., 26th Brigade. Born and
educated at Pialba. The son of Hennerigh
and Annie Martens, of Crown Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted 7th April, and went to
camp in Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt in May,
1915, where he completed his training.
Landed at Marseilles, 24th March, 1916.
From there he went straight to the line, and
was wounded three times, the last time being
on the 29th July, 1916, was sent to Eng
land for treatment, where he had his leg
amputated. He arrived back in Brisbane in
September, 1917, and was taken to Kangaroo
Point Hospital. He was afterwards taken to
Rosemount, where he remained for about
two years, and then was discharged.
MARTENS, Francis. Private, No. 6531,
15th Batt. Born and educated at Pialba.
The son of Hennerigh and Anna Martens,
of Crown Street, Maryborough. Enlisted and
went into Enoggera Camp, attached to the
15th Batt. Sailed for England, where he
went to Salisbury Plain to complete his
training. Left for France, and went into
action, and look part in most of the big
battles. Left France for England, and was
returned to Australia, and finally discharged.
MATHESON, Robert Forgrave. No. 1938,
42nd Batt., late 49th Batt. Born at Mary
borough, and educated at Grammar School,
Maryborough. The son of James St. Clair
and Hannah Matheson, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted in December, 1915,
and went into camp at Brisbane for train
ing. Left for Egypt Ist May, 1916, and then
on to England, where he went to Salisbury
Plain. Left for France, 25th November,
1916. Took part in the Battle of Messines,
and all the heavy engagements up to and in
cluding the final rout of the Germans at
Villiers Brettoneaux. Was with his unit when
the Armistice was signed.
MATHESON, Colin. Ist Lieutenant, 13th
Field Coy. Engineers. Born at Maryborough,
and educated at Boys’ Grammar School,
Maryborough. The son of James St. Clair
and Hannah Matheson, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted in August, 1915.
Was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant A.1.F., October,
1915, after some months on instructional
duty at Enoggera was promoted to Lieuten
ant. Left Australia for Egypt in charge of
the 12th Rfts. Ist Divisional Engineers in
December, 1915. Was transferred to 4th
Division in Egypt, and took part in the con
struction of the Suez Canal defences. Left
for France, and arrived in June, 1916, going
straight into the lines at Fleurs Baix. During
the heavy fighting at Pozieres was attached
successively to the Ist, 2nd, and 4th Divi
sions. At the attack on Moquet Farm,
August, 1916, was severely wounded, and
was sent to hospital in France and England.
Was sent home to Australia medically unfit
for active service, and was discharged in
June. 1917.
McDONALD, Victor Hamilton. No. 5389,
31 st Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late Roderick Alexander McDonald and Mary Shaw McDonald
(now Mrs. G. P. Dicken), of Wedd Street,
Spring Hill, Brisbane. Was married on Ist
November, 1911, to Constance Charlotte,
daughter of Conrad and Alice Weneheimet,
of Urangan, and has two sons and one
daughter. Enlisted January 23rd, 1918, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Left on February
28th, 1917, and arrived in England in due
course, where he went to Salisbury Plain.
Left for France, but was returned through
illness. Arrived in Australia Ist March, 1919,
and was honourably discharged 1 7th March,
1919.
MICHELSON, Eric Gilbert. Signaller, No.
2842, 6th Rfts. 44th Batt., late 42nd. # Born
at Maryborough, and educated at Boys Cen
tral School, and Christian Brothers School,
Maryborough. The son of John Henrich and
Charlotte Alice Michelson. Enlisted July.
1915, and went into camp at Brisbane.
Sailed for England January, 1916, where he
completed his training. Left for France, and
went into action. Was wounded while in
the firing line, and recovered, but was killed
in the line on 11th April, 1918.
MIKKELSEN, Percy. Corporal, No. 1699,
49th Batt. Born at Bundaberg. The son of
Niels Julius and Christiana Charlotte
Mikkelson, of Maryborough, Qld. Enlisted
January, 1916, and went into camp at Bris
bane. Sailed 19th April, 1916, for Egypt,
and thence to France, arriving 1 Ith June,
1916. Went straight to the firing line, and
was wounded at Pozieres, Bth August, 1916,
and again at St. Quentin, 15th August, 1918.
Contracted Spanish influenza while in Lon
don, and was returned home medically unfit
for active service, and discharged 3rd
March, 1919.
MORTON, Norman Edward. Trooper. No.
1301, 14th Rfts., 11th Light Horse. Born
and educated at Maryborough. He is a
son of Thomas and Susanna Morton, or
Alice Street, Maryborough. Enlisted April,
1916 at Kingaroy, and went into Enoggera
Camp. Sailed December, 1916, for Egypt,
where he completed his training. _ Left for
Palestine Area and saw service in Egypt*
Palestine, and Syria.
MORTON, Reginald Victor. Private, No.
4571, 31st Batt. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of Thomas and
Susanna Morton, of Alice Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted in Brisbane, October,
1916, and went into Enoggera Camp, where
he was attached to the 3 1 st Batt. Sailed for
England in December, 1916, where he com
pleted his training at Salisbury Plain. Left
for France October, 1917, and went into
action. Went through most of the battles
in 1918, and finally sent home to Australia
and discharged.
SCHAFER, Otto Hermann, M.M. Corporal,
No. 1513, 26th Battalion. Born and educated
at Maryborough. The son of the late Her
mann Fredrich Albert Schafer and Anna
Conradine Pauline Schafer, of Wilson Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted April, 1915, and went
into camp at Brisbane. Sailed in June, 1915,
for Egypt. Was at the landing at Gallipoli
Wounded in November, 1915, and returned
to Egypt to hospital for treatment, where he
remained for some time. Sent to France with
the first contingent, and saw much fighting,
being wounded for the second time in Oct.,
1916, but remained behind the lines. In June,
1917, he sailed to England, where he was
engaged instructing in bomb throwing at
Salisbury Plain until January 31st, 1918,
when he was accidentally gassed. Returned
to France in February, 1918, and was on
active service until his death on 2nd Septem
ber, 1918, at the Somme battle field. He was
shot through the stomach by machine gun
fire, and killed on the spot, and buried in a
military cemetery between Mt. St. Quentin
and Peronne. Was awarded the Military
Medal at Villiers Brettoneaux, on the I 4th
July, 1918.
HERSCHELL, William Henry. Private, No.
6095, 26th Battalion. Born at Maryborough
in 1885 and educated at Maryborough. En
listed at Toowoomba on 18th August, 1916,
and sailed from Brisbane for England in
October, going to Salisbury Plain. Sent
into the firing line in France and wounded
on 20th September, 1917, at the Battle of
Ypres. Subsequently returned to Australia.
HILLS, James Ernest. Private, No. 3146,
45th Battalion. Was born and educated in
Maryborough. He is the son of Ernest Hills
and Mary Elizabeth Hills, of Pialba, Qld.
Enlisted in Sept., 1916, and went to camp
in October, at Brisbane, where he was at
tached to the 45th Battalion. He sailed end
of 1916 for England, and went to Salisbury
Plain to complete his training. He was de
spatched to France, and went straight to
the firing line. Was wounded twice and sent
to England to recuperate on first wound, and
stayed in France the second time.
HOCKLEY, Rupert Reginald. Major. Born
at Ipswich, and educated at Maryborough
Grammar School. The son of the late James
and Elizabeth Hockley. Sailed on 1 sth
November, 1915, as Senior Company Com
mander, 3 Ist Battalion, and served in Egypt
and the Sinai Peninsula until March, 1916,
when he was elected to be the first Second
in-Command of the newly-formed 2nd Aust.
Pioneer Battalion. Arrived at Marseilles on
25th March, and went into the line on 7th
April, 1916. In the following July moved
to the Somme. Took part in the battle of
Pozieres and Moquet Farm. Did invaluable
work in reconnaisance and supervision dur
these operations. On the 1 sth November,
1916, he assumed the command of the
battalion as temporary Lieut.-Colonel for
three months. He was next employed near
Lesars, and in driving the Germans back
through Baupaume to the vaunted Hinden
berg Line, and took part in the attack on
the Hlndenberg Line between Bullecourt and
Queant. Into the line on 9th September,
1917, for the offensive on the Menin Road,
where he did very strenuous gallant work.
Was severely wounded on the 1 9th Septem
ber, and died at a casualty clearing station
next day. He was buried in a military ceme
tery between Poperinghe and Abeel. He
was awarded the D.S.O. and mentioned in
the Commander-in-Chief’s despatches.
JAKEMAN, Tom. Private, No. 2648. Born
at Maryborough on 6th June, 1883, and edu
cated at Maryborough and Lakeside. Son of
the late James and the late Mary Jakeman.
JOHNSTON, Alexander Wilfred. Acting
Sergeant, No. 17,170, Wireless Squadron.
Born at Maryborough in 1881, and
educated at the Newtown West State
School, Maryborough. Son of the late
Alexander George and Ann Elizabeth John
ston, of Maryborough. Married on 26th
June, 1908, Amy Laura Hopkins, daughter
of the late Isaac and the late Mary Ann
Hopkins. Children Norman Wilfred and
Harold Isaac Johnston. Left Sydney on
20th January, 1917, with the Bth Rein
forcements of the Ist Australian Wireless
Squadron for Mesopotamia, and arrived at
Basra early in March. After serving as
Sapper and Acting Sergeant in charge of
the Wireless Equipment Stores at Bagdad,
was invalided to Deolali and Upper Topa, in
India, and then to Australia, in August,
1918.
JONES, Daniel. Private, No. 1356, sth Light
Horse. Born and educated at Maryborough.
He is the son of Morgan and Margaret Jones.
Enlisted 12/8/15, and sailed 5/10/15, for
Egypt, and was in all engagements through
Palestine. Was wounded slightly, and went
into the I 4th Aust. Gen. Hospital, Port Said,
and, after recovery, went back to the firing
line, and remained on active service up to
the Armistice. Arrived back in Australia
4/8/19, per S.S. "Madras.”
KENNEDY, John. Private, No. 5617, 26th
Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. He is the son of Henry and Jane
Kennedy, of Dundas Street, Granville, Mary
borough. Enlisted, and went into camp at
Brisbane on 15th April, 1916, for training.
Sailed for England 7th September, 1916, and
completed his training at Salisbury Plain,
Left for France November, and in March,
1917, was sent to Bristol, England, with
trench feet, where he remained for about
three months. Returned to France June,
1917, and remained in line till 2nd Septem
ber, 1918, when he was wounded in left arm
by machine gun fire, and sent to England for
treatment. He was in hospital for nearly
twelve months, the muscles and nerves in the
arm being badly damaged. Was drafted for
Australia, where he arrived in due course,
and finally discharged.
LEE, Ernest W. C. No. 6273, 9th Battalion.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Ernest Lee and Minnie Lee, of
Ann Street, Maryborough. Enlisted 26th
Feb., 1916, and went to camp at Brisbane.
Attached to the 9th Batt. Sailed for England
7th September, 1916, and went to Salisbury
Plain. Left for France, and into action. Was
gassed and was sent into hospital. He re
turned to the firing line, and contracted
trench feet. He was sent to hospital again,
but subsequently returned to the line. He
was drafted for Australia, where he arrived
in due course and finally discharged.
LINDEBERG, Walter Clarence. No. 31,900.
Born and educated at Maryborough. He is
the son of Christian August Lindeberg and
Henrietta Christine Lindeberg, of Dundas St.,
Maryborough. Enlisted July, 1916, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed with his
brother Albert Victor, and was with him till
they arrived in the lines. He was gassed in
October, 1917, and was sent to England for
treatment, where he remained until about
March, 1918. Returned to the firing line and
remained there till the Armistice was signed.
Left for Australia, and was finally discharged.
LINDEBERG, Albert Victor Vernon. Gunner,
No. 31,901. Born and educated at Mary
borough. He is the son of Christian August
and Henrietta Christine Lindeberg, of Dundas
St., Maryborough. Enlisted July, 1916, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for Eng
land early in February 1917, and arrived in
April, and went to Salisbury Plain to com
plete his training. Left for France in July,
1917, and went straight to the firing line,
where he remained practically the whole
time without a break until August, 1918,
when he was gassed and dropped behind the
line for a short spell. Returned to the line
and remained there till the Armistice was
signed. He was with his brother, Walter
Clarence, the whole time.
LINDEBERG, Percy Lawrence. Born and edu
cated at Maryborough. He is the son of
Christian August and Henrietta Christine
Lindeberg, of Dundas Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted about October, 191 6,and camped
in Sydney. Sailed for England in January,
1917, and completed his training at Salis
bury Plain. He worked in the Aviation
School, where he had the misfortune to lose
an eye, which prevented his going to France
for active service. He remained in England
the whole time in aviation and munition work
till the end of the war.
MARTENS, Albert Stanley. Private, No.
120, 27th Batt., 26th Brigade. Born and
educated at Pialba. The son of Hennerigh
and Annie Martens, of Crown Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted 7th April, and went to
camp in Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt in May,
1915, where he completed his training.
Landed at Marseilles, 24th March, 1916.
From there he went straight to the line, and
was wounded three times, the last time being
on the 29th July, 1916, was sent to Eng
land for treatment, where he had his leg
amputated. He arrived back in Brisbane in
September, 1917, and was taken to Kangaroo
Point Hospital. He was afterwards taken to
Rosemount, where he remained for about
two years, and then was discharged.
MARTENS, Francis. Private, No. 6531,
15th Batt. Born and educated at Pialba.
The son of Hennerigh and Anna Martens,
of Crown Street, Maryborough. Enlisted and
went into Enoggera Camp, attached to the
15th Batt. Sailed for England, where he
went to Salisbury Plain to complete his
training. Left for France, and went into
action, and look part in most of the big
battles. Left France for England, and was
returned to Australia, and finally discharged.
MATHESON, Robert Forgrave. No. 1938,
42nd Batt., late 49th Batt. Born at Mary
borough, and educated at Grammar School,
Maryborough. The son of James St. Clair
and Hannah Matheson, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted in December, 1915,
and went into camp at Brisbane for train
ing. Left for Egypt Ist May, 1916, and then
on to England, where he went to Salisbury
Plain. Left for France, 25th November,
1916. Took part in the Battle of Messines,
and all the heavy engagements up to and in
cluding the final rout of the Germans at
Villiers Brettoneaux. Was with his unit when
the Armistice was signed.
MATHESON, Colin. Ist Lieutenant, 13th
Field Coy. Engineers. Born at Maryborough,
and educated at Boys’ Grammar School,
Maryborough. The son of James St. Clair
and Hannah Matheson, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted in August, 1915.
Was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant A.1.F., October,
1915, after some months on instructional
duty at Enoggera was promoted to Lieuten
ant. Left Australia for Egypt in charge of
the 12th Rfts. Ist Divisional Engineers in
December, 1915. Was transferred to 4th
Division in Egypt, and took part in the con
struction of the Suez Canal defences. Left
for France, and arrived in June, 1916, going
straight into the lines at Fleurs Baix. During
the heavy fighting at Pozieres was attached
successively to the Ist, 2nd, and 4th Divi
sions. At the attack on Moquet Farm,
August, 1916, was severely wounded, and
was sent to hospital in France and England.
Was sent home to Australia medically unfit
for active service, and was discharged in
June. 1917.
McDONALD, Victor Hamilton. No. 5389,
31 st Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late Roderick Alexander McDonald and Mary Shaw McDonald
(now Mrs. G. P. Dicken), of Wedd Street,
Spring Hill, Brisbane. Was married on Ist
November, 1911, to Constance Charlotte,
daughter of Conrad and Alice Weneheimet,
of Urangan, and has two sons and one
daughter. Enlisted January 23rd, 1918, and
went into camp at Brisbane. Left on February
28th, 1917, and arrived in England in due
course, where he went to Salisbury Plain.
Left for France, but was returned through
illness. Arrived in Australia Ist March, 1919,
and was honourably discharged 1 7th March,
1919.
MICHELSON, Eric Gilbert. Signaller, No.
2842, 6th Rfts. 44th Batt., late 42nd. # Born
at Maryborough, and educated at Boys Cen
tral School, and Christian Brothers School,
Maryborough. The son of John Henrich and
Charlotte Alice Michelson. Enlisted July.
1915, and went into camp at Brisbane.
Sailed for England January, 1916, where he
completed his training. Left for France, and
went into action. Was wounded while in
the firing line, and recovered, but was killed
in the line on 11th April, 1918.
MIKKELSEN, Percy. Corporal, No. 1699,
49th Batt. Born at Bundaberg. The son of
Niels Julius and Christiana Charlotte
Mikkelson, of Maryborough, Qld. Enlisted
January, 1916, and went into camp at Bris
bane. Sailed 19th April, 1916, for Egypt,
and thence to France, arriving 1 Ith June,
1916. Went straight to the firing line, and
was wounded at Pozieres, Bth August, 1916,
and again at St. Quentin, 15th August, 1918.
Contracted Spanish influenza while in Lon
don, and was returned home medically unfit
for active service, and discharged 3rd
March, 1919.
MORTON, Norman Edward. Trooper. No.
1301, 14th Rfts., 11th Light Horse. Born
and educated at Maryborough. He is a
son of Thomas and Susanna Morton, or
Alice Street, Maryborough. Enlisted April,
1916 at Kingaroy, and went into Enoggera
Camp. Sailed December, 1916, for Egypt,
where he completed his training. _ Left for
Palestine Area and saw service in Egypt*
Palestine, and Syria.
MORTON, Reginald Victor. Private, No.
4571, 31st Batt. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of Thomas and
Susanna Morton, of Alice Street, Mary
borough. Enlisted in Brisbane, October,
1916, and went into Enoggera Camp, where
he was attached to the 3 1 st Batt. Sailed for
England in December, 1916, where he com
pleted his training at Salisbury Plain. Left
for France October, 1917, and went into
action. Went through most of the battles
in 1918, and finally sent home to Australia
and discharged.
SCHAFER, Otto Hermann, M.M. Corporal,
No. 1513, 26th Battalion. Born and educated
at Maryborough. The son of the late Her
mann Fredrich Albert Schafer and Anna
Conradine Pauline Schafer, of Wilson Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted April, 1915, and went
into camp at Brisbane. Sailed in June, 1915,
for Egypt. Was at the landing at Gallipoli
Wounded in November, 1915, and returned
to Egypt to hospital for treatment, where he
remained for some time. Sent to France with
the first contingent, and saw much fighting,
being wounded for the second time in Oct.,
1916, but remained behind the lines. In June,
1917, he sailed to England, where he was
engaged instructing in bomb throwing at
Salisbury Plain until January 31st, 1918,
when he was accidentally gassed. Returned
to France in February, 1918, and was on
active service until his death on 2nd Septem
ber, 1918, at the Somme battle field. He was
shot through the stomach by machine gun
fire, and killed on the spot, and buried in a
military cemetery between Mt. St. Quentin
and Peronne. Was awarded the Military
Medal at Villiers Brettoneaux, on the I 4th
July, 1918.
SHAW, Ernest William. Private, No. I 746,
52nd Battalion. Born at Brisbane, and edu
cated at Maryborough. The son of Harry and
Alice Shaw, of John Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted December, 1915, and went into
camp at Brisbane for training. Sailed for
Egypt in April, 1916, where he remained
only a week, and was then sent to France,
and went straight to the firing line. Remained
till November, 1916, when he was wounded
by a bomb explosion. He was sent to the
Base Hospital for treatment, and remained
there for about twelve months, the last couple
of months being taken up with helping the
doctors in the hospital. It was found that he
was not fit for the work, and was then sent
to Weymouth, and returned home on the 4th
November, 1917.
SHAW. Edward Thomas. Driver, No. 12 7,
Army Service Corps. Born at Mary
borough, and educated at Albert State
School. Maryborough. The son of James and
Ada Shaw, of Kent Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted at the beginning of the war, and saw
service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France and
killed in action in France on 25th May, 1918
SHERWIN, Reynold. Private, No. 5802, I sth
Battalion. Born at Maryborough, and edu
cated at Childers. The son of the late Wil
liam Sherwin and Marie Sherwin (now Mrs.
Cullum), of Cheapside Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted January, 1916, at Childers, and went
Into camp at Brisbane. He sailed for Egypt
4th May, 1916, where he completed his
training. Despatched to France in November,
1916, and went straight to the firing line.
Gassed in September, 1917, and February,
1918, and sent to England for treatment and
furlough each time. Sailed from England 20th
February, 1919, and arrived home in More
ton Bay 6th April, 1919.
SINCLAIR, James. Trooper, No. 1787, 9th
Rein., 11th Light Horse. Born in Scotland,
and educated at Tiaro. The son of the late
William Sinclair and Ann Sinclair, of Tor
quay, England. Enlisted and went into camp
at Brisbane October, 1915. Sailed March,
1916, for Egypt. Went to the Palestine area,
and was never wounded. Returned to Aus
tralia, and discharged medically unfit, owing
to asthma.
SINCLAIR, John George. Air Mechanic, No.
2194. Born and educated at Tiaro. The son
of the late William Sinclair and Ann Sinclair,
of Torquay, Q’ld. Enlisted Nov. 1916. and
camped at Brisbane. Sailed October 29th,
1917, from Melbourne. Arrived in England
2 7th December, 1917. Trained with the Civil
Schools. Was returned home on account of
the Armistice

15th Batt. and 41st Battery, A.F.A. Born
at Maryborough in 1893, and educated at
Maryborough State School. Enlisted at
Maryborough on 17th September, 1914, and
went into Enoggera Camp. Sailed for
Egypt on 22nd December, 1914, with the
Original 15th Batt. Was present at the
landing on Gallipoli, and was wounded on
7th May, 1915, and invalided to Alexandria.
Transferred to the 41st Battery, and went to
France on 10th June, 1916. Wounded and
invalided to England. Returned to the line
and was again wounded at Passchendaele or.
I 6th September, 1917, and was invalided
to England, and thence to Australia. Ar
rived in Australia on 14th June, 1918, and
discharged on 13th July, 1918, and is now
on the Soldiers’ Settlement, at Beerburrum
STUPART, George Campbell. Lance-Cor
poral, No. 496. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late George and
late Jessie Campbell Stupart. Enlisted and
saw service in Gallipoli, where he was killed
in action 30th April, 1915.
THOMPSON, Charles Henry. So. 1582.
Australian Flying Corps. Born and educated
in Maryborough. The son of Henry Thomp
son Bradshaw and Francis Margaret Brad
shaw, of Ferry Street. Enlisted in Rockhamp
ton. 1916, and trained in Brisbane. Left for
Melbourne, and went into camp for further
training. Left for England, where he went
to Salisbury Plain. Left for France, and saw
service with Flying Corps.
TUOHY, Francis Dennis. No. 5 7,922, 26th
Battalion. Mr. Tuohy was born and educated
at Maryborough. He is the son of Patrick
Joseph Tuohy and Catherine Tuohy, of Ferry
Street, Maryborough. Enlisted January IV I b,
but was discharged in March, same
year. Re-enlisted May, 1918, and
went into camp at Brisbane on 3rd June,
1918. Trained and sailed for England where
he went to Salisbury Plain to complete his
training. Was transferred to the Transport
Section, and left for France. He went through
most of the latter stages of the war, and
was never wounded.
WALTON, James. Stoker, R.A.N. Born and
educated at Maryborough. The son of John
and Elizabeth Walton, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted January, 1916, at
Maryborough. He was sent to Williamstown
for training, and afterwards sent aboard the
"Una,” which was on patrol duty. He re
turned to Sydney in March, and after having
his leave, returned to Melbourne and resumed
duty on one of the battleships.
WARRY, Stanley Richard. Captain, M.C.,
42nd Battalion. Born at Maryborough in
1884, and educated at Maryborough Gram
mar School. The son of Richard Symes and
Sarah Clara Warry, of Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, and left Australia as
2nd Lieutenant in July, 1916. Attended
Hyling Island Musketry School, and secured
Ist class pass in December, 1916. Joined
battalion in France, and appointed Tempor
ary Captain in June, 1917. During the latter
part of 1917 and the early part of 1918 was
with battalion in all line work in Flanders,
and the latter part of 1918 was in action as
Company Commander. Was awarded the
M.C. on 12th July, 1918. After the Armis
tice was transferred to 1 I th Infantry Brigade,
and returned to Australia in May, 1919.
WARRY, Victor Thomas Symes. Lieutenant,
25th Battalion. Born at Maryborough in
1895, and educated at Maryborough Gram
mar School and Newington College, Sydney.
Son of Richard Symes and Sarah Clara
Warry, of Maryborough. Was an employee
of Brabant and Co. Prior to enlisting he was
a lieutenant in the Cadets at Newington
College, and at the outbreak of war he was
called up and transferred to the Moreton
Regiment. He then volunteered for active
service, and when the 25th Battalion was
formed he was allotted as one of its officers,
although only 19 years of age. Sailed for
Egypt, and thence to Gallipoli, with the 25th
Batt. Met with an accident and Invalided
to Malta. Returned to Egypt, and was sent
to France in March, 1916, and killed in
action on 29th July, 1916.
WHITAKER, Albert Edward. Private, No.
4615. Born and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Charles and Mary Ann Whitaker,
of Churchill Street, Maryborough. Enlisted
September 16th, 1915, at Maryborough, and
sailed January 31st, 1916, with 14th/15th
Batt. Transferred to the sth Div. Cyclists, in
Egypt, and transferred again to 2nd Anzac
Cycle Batt., 1916, then to the Ist A.C.C.
Batt., in 1918. He was on service for 4
years and 3 days, and abroad for 3 years,
I 7 8 days.
WHITAKER Reginald Francis Coats, Stoker
Ist Class, No. 6075. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of Charles and Mary Ann Whitaker, of
Churchill Street, Maryborough. Enrolled on Royal
Australian Navy on 30 March 1917. Joined the
Light Cruiser "Brisbane" 29 June 1917. Drafted to
Battle Cruiser "Australia" 1 Septemeber 1919

trench feet, and was sent to England to re
cuperate. After recovering, he returned to
France and was never wounded.
WILSON, Andrew Robinson. Private, No.
1766, 31st Battalion. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of the late Thomas
Wilson and the late Annie Cumming Wilson.
Enlisted September, 1915, and went into
camp at Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt January,
1916, where he completed his training. Left
for France in June, 1916, and went straight
to the firing line. Wounded in July, 1916,
but returned to the line a couple of months
later, where he remained till the Armistice
was signed.
WILSON, Donald Cumming. 2nd Air Me
chanic, No. 1496. Born at Maryborough, and
educated at the Grammar .School, Mary
borough. The son of the late Thomas and
Annie Gumming Wilson. Enlisted September,
1916, and went into camp at Brisbane. Went
to Melbourne, where he remained till May,
1917 when he qualified for the rank of me
chanic. Sailed for England in May, where he
remained till April, 1918, when he was sent
home. His principal work during that time
was repairing aeroplanes.
WILSON, Robert Millar. Private, No. 1 765,
31st Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late Thomas and
Annie Cumming Wilson. Enlisted July, 1915,
and went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for
Egypt in January, 1916, where he completed
his training. Left for France in January,
1916, and went straight to the line. He was
wounded in July, 1916, and sent to England
for treatment. After this, he was off duty for
some considerable time with his right elbow
badly smashed. He returned to the line in
due course where he remained till the Armis
tice was signed.
WOODHOUSE, Robert. No. 5495, 9th Batt.
Born at Tiaro and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Robert Charles Colman Wood
house and the late Mrs. Woodhouse. R. C.
C. Woodhouse now resides at Torquay,
Pialba. Enlisted 1 Ith October, I9lr>, and
went into camp at Brisbane, and left for
Egypt I 9th April, 1916. Sailed for Alexan
dria in June, 1916, and thence to England,
where he completed his training. He left for
France on the 20th September, 1916, and
went straight to the firing line. Wounded on
the 20th September, 1917, at Ypres, and was
taken to Kanyres Hospital for treatment.
Returned to Liave, being declared unfit for
further service in the line. He was sent to
England, and thence to Australia, on 3rd
February, 1918.
WYLIE, William Norman. Corporal, No.
I 772, 52nd Battalion, transferred to 49th
Batt. Born and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Henry and Ellen Wylie, of Nth.
and Coventry Streets, Maryborough. Enlisted
in Maryborough 9th January, 1916, and went
into camp at Enoggera. Sailed for England
on the 15th April, and landed in England
16th June, 1916. Completed his training at
Salisbury Plain, and was despatched to
France on September 15th, 1916. Wounded
7th June, 1917, at Messines, and placed in
the Base Hospital. Upon recovery, he re
turned to the firing line and was slightly
gassed twice. He returned to the line again,
and was there till the Armistice was signed.

Enlisted at the beginning of the war, and saw
service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France and
killed in action in France on 25th May, 1918
SHERWIN, Reynold. Private, No. 5802, I sth
Battalion. Born at Maryborough, and edu
cated at Childers. The son of the late Wil
liam Sherwin and Marie Sherwin (now Mrs.
Cullum), of Cheapside Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted January, 1916, at Childers, and went
Into camp at Brisbane. He sailed for Egypt
4th May, 1916, where he completed his
training. Despatched to France in November,
1916, and went straight to the firing line.
Gassed in September, 1917, and February,
1918, and sent to England for treatment and
furlough each time. Sailed from England 20th
February, 1919, and arrived home in More
ton Bay 6th April, 1919.
SINCLAIR, James. Trooper, No. 1787, 9th
Rein., 11th Light Horse. Born in Scotland,
and educated at Tiaro. The son of the late
William Sinclair and Ann Sinclair, of Tor
quay, England. Enlisted and went into camp
at Brisbane October, 1915. Sailed March,
1916, for Egypt. Went to the Palestine area,
and was never wounded. Returned to Aus
tralia, and discharged medically unfit, owing
to asthma.
SINCLAIR, John George. Air Mechanic, No.
2194. Born and educated at Tiaro. The son
of the late William Sinclair and Ann Sinclair,
of Torquay, Q’ld. Enlisted Nov. 1916. and
camped at Brisbane. Sailed October 29th,
1917, from Melbourne. Arrived in England
2 7th December, 1917. Trained with the Civil
Schools. Was returned home on account of
the Armistice
. STUART, John Charles. Private, No. 495,
15th Batt. and 41st Battery, A.F.A. Born
at Maryborough in 1893, and educated at
Maryborough State School. Enlisted at
Maryborough on 17th September, 1914, and
went into Enoggera Camp. Sailed for
Egypt on 22nd December, 1914, with the
Original 15th Batt. Was present at the
landing on Gallipoli, and was wounded on
7th May, 1915, and invalided to Alexandria.
Transferred to the 41st Battery, and went to
France on 10th June, 1916. Wounded and
invalided to England. Returned to the line
and was again wounded at Passchendaele or.
I 6th September, 1917, and was invalided
to England, and thence to Australia. Ar
rived in Australia on 14th June, 1918, and
discharged on 13th July, 1918, and is now
on the Soldiers’ Settlement, at Beerburrum
STUPART, George Campbell. Lance-Cor
poral, No. 496. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late George and
late Jessie Campbell Stupart. Enlisted and
saw service in Gallipoli, where he was killed
in action 30th April, 1915.
THOMPSON, Charles Henry. So. 1582.
Australian Flying Corps. Born and educated
in Maryborough. The son of Henry Thomp
son Bradshaw and Francis Margaret Brad
shaw, of Ferry Street. Enlisted in Rockhamp
ton. 1916, and trained in Brisbane. Left for
Melbourne, and went into camp for further
training. Left for England, where he went
to Salisbury Plain. Left for France, and saw
service with Flying Corps.
TUOHY, Francis Dennis. No. 5 7,922, 26th
Battalion. Mr. Tuohy was born and educated
at Maryborough. He is the son of Patrick
Joseph Tuohy and Catherine Tuohy, of Ferry
Street, Maryborough. Enlisted January IV I b,
but was discharged in March, same
year. Re-enlisted May, 1918, and
went into camp at Brisbane on 3rd June,
1918. Trained and sailed for England where
he went to Salisbury Plain to complete his
training. Was transferred to the Transport
Section, and left for France. He went through
most of the latter stages of the war, and
was never wounded.
WALTON, James. Stoker, R.A.N. Born and
educated at Maryborough. The son of John
and Elizabeth Walton, of Walker Street,
Maryborough. Enlisted January, 1916, at
Maryborough. He was sent to Williamstown
for training, and afterwards sent aboard the
"Una,” which was on patrol duty. He re
turned to Sydney in March, and after having
his leave, returned to Melbourne and resumed
duty on one of the battleships.
WARRY, Stanley Richard. Captain, M.C.,
42nd Battalion. Born at Maryborough in
1884, and educated at Maryborough Gram
mar School. The son of Richard Symes and
Sarah Clara Warry, of Maryborough. En
listed in August, 1915, and left Australia as
2nd Lieutenant in July, 1916. Attended
Hyling Island Musketry School, and secured
Ist class pass in December, 1916. Joined
battalion in France, and appointed Tempor
ary Captain in June, 1917. During the latter
part of 1917 and the early part of 1918 was
with battalion in all line work in Flanders,
and the latter part of 1918 was in action as
Company Commander. Was awarded the
M.C. on 12th July, 1918. After the Armis
tice was transferred to 1 I th Infantry Brigade,
and returned to Australia in May, 1919.
WARRY, Victor Thomas Symes. Lieutenant,
25th Battalion. Born at Maryborough in
1895, and educated at Maryborough Gram
mar School and Newington College, Sydney.
Son of Richard Symes and Sarah Clara
Warry, of Maryborough. Was an employee
of Brabant and Co. Prior to enlisting he was
a lieutenant in the Cadets at Newington
College, and at the outbreak of war he was
called up and transferred to the Moreton
Regiment. He then volunteered for active
service, and when the 25th Battalion was
formed he was allotted as one of its officers,
although only 19 years of age. Sailed for
Egypt, and thence to Gallipoli, with the 25th
Batt. Met with an accident and Invalided
to Malta. Returned to Egypt, and was sent
to France in March, 1916, and killed in
action on 29th July, 1916.
WHITAKER, Albert Edward. Private, No.
4615. Born and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Charles and Mary Ann Whitaker,
of Churchill Street, Maryborough. Enlisted
September 16th, 1915, at Maryborough, and
sailed January 31st, 1916, with 14th/15th
Batt. Transferred to the sth Div. Cyclists, in
Egypt, and transferred again to 2nd Anzac
Cycle Batt., 1916, then to the Ist A.C.C.
Batt., in 1918. He was on service for 4
years and 3 days, and abroad for 3 years,
I 7 8 days.
WHITAKER Reginald Francis Coats, Stoker
Ist Class, No. 6075. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of Charles and Mary Ann Whitaker, of
Churchill Street, Maryborough. Enrolled on Royal
Australian Navy on 30 March 1917. Joined the
Light Cruiser "Brisbane" 29 June 1917. Drafted to
Battle Cruiser "Australia" 1 Septemeber 1919
4614. Born and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Charles Whitaker and Mary Ann
Whitaker, of Churchill Street, Maryborough.
Enlisted September 15th, 1915, and em
barked January, 1916, with the 14th Rein.
15th Batt. Transferred to sth Div. Cyclists,
in Egypt, and then transferred again to 31st
Batt. July Ist, 1918. Service to completion of
engagement, 3 years and 200 days. Abroad,
3 years and 13 days.
WHITAKER, Norman Augustus Fielding.
No. 9542, Ist Army Troop Coy., late 4th
Sec. Fid. Engrs. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of William Augustus
Fielding Whitaker and Mary Louisa Whita
ker, of Pialba. Enlisted 1 Ith Oct., 1915, and
camped at Brisbane. Sailed from Adelaide
31st May, 1916, for England, where he
joined rp wr*h the 1 Ith Field Engineers, and
camped at Salisbury Plain. Left for France
and went into action. Had trench fever and
trench feet, and was sent to England to re
cuperate. After recovering, he returned to
France and was never wounded.
WILSON, Andrew Robinson. Private, No.
1766, 31st Battalion. Born and educated at
Maryborough. The son of the late Thomas
Wilson and the late Annie Cumming Wilson.
Enlisted September, 1915, and went into
camp at Brisbane. Sailed for Egypt January,
1916, where he completed his training. Left
for France in June, 1916, and went straight
to the firing line. Wounded in July, 1916,
but returned to the line a couple of months
later, where he remained till the Armistice
was signed.
WILSON, Donald Cumming. 2nd Air Me
chanic, No. 1496. Born at Maryborough, and
educated at the Grammar .School, Mary
borough. The son of the late Thomas and
Annie Gumming Wilson. Enlisted September,
1916, and went into camp at Brisbane. Went
to Melbourne, where he remained till May,
1917 when he qualified for the rank of me
chanic. Sailed for England in May, where he
remained till April, 1918, when he was sent
home. His principal work during that time
was repairing aeroplanes.
WILSON, Robert Millar. Private, No. 1 765,
31st Battalion. Born and educated at Mary
borough. The son of the late Thomas and
Annie Cumming Wilson. Enlisted July, 1915,
and went into camp at Brisbane. Sailed for
Egypt in January, 1916, where he completed
his training. Left for France in January,
1916, and went straight to the line. He was
wounded in July, 1916, and sent to England
for treatment. After this, he was off duty for
some considerable time with his right elbow
badly smashed. He returned to the line in
due course where he remained till the Armis
tice was signed.
WOODHOUSE, Robert. No. 5495, 9th Batt.
Born at Tiaro and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Robert Charles Colman Wood
house and the late Mrs. Woodhouse. R. C.
C. Woodhouse now resides at Torquay,
Pialba. Enlisted 1 Ith October, I9lr>, and
went into camp at Brisbane, and left for
Egypt I 9th April, 1916. Sailed for Alexan
dria in June, 1916, and thence to England,
where he completed his training. He left for
France on the 20th September, 1916, and
went straight to the firing line. Wounded on
the 20th September, 1917, at Ypres, and was
taken to Kanyres Hospital for treatment.
Returned to Liave, being declared unfit for
further service in the line. He was sent to
England, and thence to Australia, on 3rd
February, 1918.
WYLIE, William Norman. Corporal, No.
I 772, 52nd Battalion, transferred to 49th
Batt. Born and educated at Maryborough.
The son of Henry and Ellen Wylie, of Nth.
and Coventry Streets, Maryborough. Enlisted
in Maryborough 9th January, 1916, and went
into camp at Enoggera. Sailed for England
on the 15th April, and landed in England
16th June, 1916. Completed his training at
Salisbury Plain, and was despatched to
France on September 15th, 1916. Wounded
7th June, 1917, at Messines, and placed in
the Base Hospital. Upon recovery, he re
turned to the firing line and was slightly
gassed twice. He returned to the line again,
and was there till the Armistice was signed.
Private Charles Fredrick Bosel is not pictured here. He is my great great uncle on my paternal great grandmother's side and a fourth cousin on my mother's side.
ReplyDeleteHe was born in Maryborough,31st January 1891. He was school at Tinana and died in Boulogne,France 21st October 1916, serving in the 15th Infantry Battalion.
